Goal 6 - Engage in ongoing professional growth and leadership
Example 1: This website, Culturally Responsive Education NOW, is a professional development forum and resource that I created for my graduate capstone project. In it, I have synthesized research-based information and used the ADDIE instructional design model in order to teach other professionals in my district about how to best educate African American students. The research and training focuses upon African American students and their cultures, the achievement gap, and the culturally responsive education pedagogy. This artifact meets Goal 6 because it shows how I can use what I know about instructional design and culturally responsive education to create a digitally-based resource and professional development tool to educate others on the topic, and teach them how to apply that knowledge within their own classrooms. Example 2:
This artifact is a roster from an optional iPad course offered by my school district, which I attended. During this professional development, I learned about the general iPad hardware, as well as how to use different apps for classroom learning and for collaborative purposes. This training was a day long, and the expectation was that we would take what we learned and use it for our daily business. I am also including a document about an app that I use in class, which I learned about during the training. The app is Remind101, and is used to communicate with students and parents via text message. Finally, the last artifact that I have included is a screenshot of an email exchange between myself and a coworker. In that email, she asks me about the text messaging app that I use in class, because she heard about it from my students. After the email exchange, I ended up helping her to set up the account, and training her on its uses. This artifact meets Goal 1 because it shows that I am willing to participate in extra professional development opportunities outside of the normal school day in order to learn things that will better my teaching and student learning. It also shows that I am able to take what I learned in a professional development setting and apply it in my classroom and with parents. Lastly, it shows that I can teach others in my profession about something that I specialize in, so that many more parents and students can benefit from a great digital tool.
Example 3: Sharing ideas is the best way to repeat successes. Because of this, I created this Google Doc, entitled Panther iPad Apps. In this document that I shared with my staff, teachers are able to share apps that have worked for them and discover apps that have worked for others in their content area. This artifact meets Goal 6 because it encourages professional growth, for both my colleagues and myself, through collaboration. It also shows that I can use my leadership abilities to initiate a collaborative effort centered on bettering teaching and learning at West Milwaukee Intermediate School. Panther iPad Apps
